AJAX Tutorial

Definition

AJAX(an acronym for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is a group of interrelated Web development techniques used on the client-side to create asynchronous Web applications.

History & Origin

In the 1990s, most Web sites were based on complete HTML pages. Each user action required that a complete page be loaded from the server. This process was inefficient. Each time the browser reloaded a page because of a partial change, all of the content had to be re-sent, even though only some of the information had changed. This placed additional load on the server and used excessive bandwidth. So then came this technology AJAX in order to deal with existing situation.

Features

  • AJAX is a new technique for creating better, faster, and more interactive web applications with the help of XML, HTML, CSS, and Java Script i.e. it is based on open standards.
  • Ajax uses XHTML for content, CSS for presentation, along with Document Object Model and JavaScript for dynamic content display.
  • With AJAX, when you hit submit, JavaScript will make a request to the server, interpret the results, and update the current screen. AJAX is a web browser technology independent of web server software.
  • A user can continue to use the application while the client program requests information from the server in the background
