EIGRP Route summarization

EIGRP Route summarization is used to conserve resources and clean up the routing table. It can also advance route engineering based on route summaries and longest match.

By default, EIGRP has auto summary feature enabled. Because of this, routes are summarized to classful address at network boundaries in the routing updates.

One of the advantages of EIGRP over other routing protocol (like OSPF) is that manual summarization can be done on any router within a network. A single route can be used to represent multiple routes, which reduces the size of routing tables in a network.Manual summarization is configured on a per-interface basis.

On Router 1

Router # config terminal
Router (config) # router eigrp 1
Router (config-router) # no auto-summary
Router (config-router) # network 10.1.12.0
Router (config-router) # network 1.1.1.1
Router (config-router) # network 1.1.2.1
Router (config-router) # network 1.1.3.1
Router (config-router) # network 1.1.4.1
Router (config) # interface fastethernet 0/0
Router (config-if) # ip summary-address eigrp 1 1.0.0 255.255.0.0

On Router 2

Router # config terminal
Router (config) # router eigrp 1
Router (config-router) # no auto-summary
Router (config-router) # network 10.1.12.0
