What is R

R is an open sourcestatistical powerful computer programming language based on ‘S’ and S-plus language.Being an open source R has many contributors who are writing codes to improve its functionality. Now a days R is being used in implementing machine learning algorithms. So one can consider R as a future of advance data analysis.

Name behind R

Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka has founded it in the Statistics Department of the University of Auckland in 1995. Now a days R is maintained by the R core-development team. For more updated information on R, please visit urlwww.r-project.org.

Downloading and Installing R

Being platform independent R can be installed and run on any existing OS.
Windows
  • Open http://www.r-project.org/ in your browser.
  • Click on “CRAN”.
  • Select a site near you (country nearest you).
  • Click on “Windows” under “Download and Install R”.
  • Click on “base”.
  • Click on the link for downloading the latest version of R (an .exe file).
  • When the download completes, double-click on the .exe file and answer theusual questions.
Mac OS
  • Open http://www.r-project.org/ in your browser.
  • Click on “CRAN”. You’ll see a list of mirror sites, organized by country.
  • Select a site near you.
  • Click on “MacOS X”.
  • Click on the .pkg file for the latest version of R, under “Files:”, to download it.
  • When the download completes, double-click on the .pkg file and answer theusual questions.
LINUX/UNIX
The major Linux distributions includes the packages for installing R.

You can install R on Linux or Unix in one out of two ways: using distribution packages or by building it from scratch.

On Ubuntu or Debian, use command apt-get to download and install R. Run under sudo to have the necessary privileges:

$ sudo apt-get install r-base

On Red Hat or Fedora, use yum to install or update

$ sudo yum install R.i386 Using External Data files

R has mechanism for loading varieties of external data files, Like Excel, Minitab and SPSS, CSV,TXT file format.
